July
In July we started off the month with a mini hike from Benfleet station all the way to Hadleigh Castle which is about 2.5 miles, we only took just an hour
and a quarter and it was great fun; but the weather was really hot so we had to have lots of breaks
June
In June the Beavers worked on the new Disability awareness badge. We played games where we had blindfolds on so could not see; or we could not use our
arms or legs; this was really hard. Then we had a visit from Tereasa Cutmore from the Makaton Society who taught us how we could talk using our hands.
We learnt to say the alphabet, our names and the beaver scout promise in Makaton.
May
Has been a busy month starting with a visit to the Southend Planetarium where we saw the planets, learnt about Hercules, and cancer constellations,
as well as learnt about the space station, satellites and meteorites. It was excellent fun and was part of the work needed to earn one of the beavers
new Space badges.
8 beavers also attended the summer sleepover which was held at ESSA water activities centre Nazing. Friday evening was spent on a long hike followed
by hotdogs and hot chocolate, and all beavers sound asleep by 10:30. Saturday consisted of a day on the water. Each beaver was taught to steer a boat
using a rudder and paddle before sails were added. Sadly there was a lack of wind so it was a very gentle sailing lesson. After lunch all beavers went
back out on the water this time on wobble boards with paddles. They all had great fun and got very wet. Four parents were along to assist and the
sleepover was an excellent success and everyone was looking forward to the next one in October.
April
In April we doubled the number of beavers in the colony, many of whom will be invested in May. This is great news for us. Activity wise we were
very quiet because of the two week Easter Holiday break, but the highlight was the beavers Easter Egg hunt challenge, with four teams having to
hunt for the correctly coloured Easter eggs for their team. It all happened on the Church playing field and there is the remove possibility that
not all eggs were discovered as they were hidden well.
The Scout Association has also released 8 new activity badges for the beavers to work towards and it was really great to realise that some of
the planned activities for the summer count towards these new badges also.
we are also really looking hard for some new permanent leaders / adult helpers for the colony as we grow so that we can continue to go out and
about and take part in lots of new things.
March
Highlight of the month was the sweetie making night, where not only did we host 5 new beavers to the colony, but with the help of four
parents the beavers made coconut ice, peppermint creams, rocky road cakes and chocolate krispie cakes. Very messy but they tasted great.
Beavers went home with the recipes so just have to wonder how many made more at home. Really big thank you to the parent helpers for
not just this night but all nights.
February
A quiet month where we focused on badge work for the health and fitness challenge badges and also held a parents & presentation night
where the Danny Green fund Charity were presented with their sponsorship monies and all beavers received a charity awareness wrist
band as a thank you and parents were invited to see the beavers presented with badges following their hard work.
